How can CAREERS support my school?

CAREERS partners with schools to promote stay-in-school messages, increase career awareness and facilitate work exploration. We work in all areas of the province to assist you in bringing career awareness to your students in new and meaningful ways.

Here’s how:

Student Career Awareness Workshops
The CAREERS team runs workshops and presentations in junior and senior high school classrooms to help students make informed choices about their future career paths. During the presentations we talk to students about the importance of staying in school, discuss the career exploration programs available to them, play a video featuring Alberta students who’ve had success in our programs, and tell them how they can get involved.

Parent Awareness Workshops
Keeping parents informed of the programs their teens become involved with is key to students’ success. CAREERS team members run evening presentations that educate parents about CAREERS’ programs, job opportunities in their area, and how their teens can find career success.

Conducting Student Interviews
Students have an opportunity to test their interview skills as part of the application process for our programs. To pre-screen students, we suggest the Work Experience Coordinators conduct initial interviews with students. A CAREERS team member can support you in this process.

Employer Recruitment
The CAREERS team finds potential employers for student interns. We also instruct those employers on their responsibilities in participating in the programs. We will help you match students with appropriate employers.

Apprenticeships and Internships
CAREERS supports and promotes the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) by recruiting employers from industry and working with schools to match them with suitable student apprentices. CAREERS has also created the Health Services Summer Internship Program, the Production Field Operator Internship, the Forestry Youth Education Initiative and the Skilled Workforce (AHEAD) Career Development Program for students to explore career options.

Career Camps
Our career camps allow young people in grades 9 – 12 to attend post-secondary institutions and participate in orientation, safety, career exploratory hands-on activities and practical labs to increase awareness and choice in a career cluster.
