The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is an Alberta Education program that allows students to begin apprenticeship training while completing their high school course work. CAREERS: The Next Generation supports RAP by linking employers with committed student apprentices who are the best fit for their workplace.
How can I employ a RAP student?
If you are eligible to employ an apprentice, you can participate. RAP students can apprentice in any the 51 provincially designated trades.
How it works
RECRUITMENT
CAREERS conducts classroom presentations in junior and senior high schools across Alberta to raise awareness of the trades. Interested students sign up and undergo an interview and application process.
A potential RAP participant must:
- be on track to graduate and have a good attendance record
- submit two teacher recommendations and one recommendation from a community member and
- research the trade of interest.
Students are then matched with appropriate employers, who are encouraged to conduct interviews with the students before hiring them.
PROBATIONARY INTERNSHIP
Once the match is made, students will complete a 125-hour internship with the employer. This allows the student the chance to explore the trade, and the employer can observe the student’s employability skills.
INDENTURE PERIOD
Once students complete the 125-hour internship, employers register them with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. Students begin logging apprenticeship hours.
FOLLOW UP
Employers and RAP coordinators work together to provide on-going evaluations for the RAP students. Students graduate high school and in many cases continue on to becoming certified tradespeople with their indenturing employer.
