Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)
Q: At what grade can students enter RAP?
A: CAREERS Students can enter RAP as early as grade 10. They can also enter the program in grades 11 and 12.
Q: Can I hire the student after he or she finishes RAP?
A: Yes. You can hire a student, but you are not obligated to.
Q: What happens if my RAP student is not working out?
A: First, discuss any concerns you have with the student and his or her RAP coordinator. If the problems are not resolved, you have the right to terminate a student’s placement/employment for cause at any time.
Q: Do RAP students receive technical training while in high school?
A: RAP students generally receive apprenticeship technical training after they graduate from high school and upon completion of their first-year apprenticeship hours.
Q: Can RAP students earn a high school diploma?
A: Yes. RAP is an Alberta Education program, and students must be on track to graduate to participate. Upon completion of RAP and all mandatory high school classes, RAP students receive a general high school diploma like all other Alberta students.
Q: Are students expected to stay with the same employer for both RAP work terms?
A: Ordinarily, students are expected to complete RAP with one employer. However, from time to time, the workload decreases in one location and students need to relocate with another employer to complete their hours.
Q: If a student completes RAP in Grade 11, does he or she have to continue in the program in Grade 12?
A: No. Students choose whether they will continue in RAP after they have completed their first term.
Q: Can students continue in RAP after they graduate?
A: No. RAP is a high school program. Many students, however, do return to their employer to complete all their required first-year apprenticeship hours after they graduate high school.
Health Services Program
Q: What are some of the potential areas for summer internships?
There is a wide range of areas student can support during the Health Services Summer Internship. Some examples include Admitting, Community Health, Dentistry, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency, Laboratory, Nursing, Pediatrics, and Speech Therapy. Q: How does this program differ from other summer employment programs?
Unlike other student employment programs, the philosophy of the Health Services Internship Program is to offer learning opportunities for high school students, so they can make informed career decisions. This program emphasizes career exploration and results in students graduating with better understanding of opportunities within the health industry.
Q: Can I hire the same student again next summer?
A: It depends on the policy of your health region. Some regions allow mentors to rehire a summer student for a second internship, while others prefer keeping the positions open to allow as many students as possible the opportunity to explore health sciences occupations.
Q: Can I hire a student intern after he or she finishes the Summer Internship Program?
A: Yes. Students, who have performed well during the intern are great candidates to fill future positions, especially because they have already received some training.
Q: What happens if my intern is not working out?
